Williams: In a Racialized America, Who Possesses the Gun Matters

Cradling my weapon, I did not understand the racialized arc of gun history. Nor did I foresee how this history would intersect with my own path. How I would someday walk into emergency departments and operating rooms to work on bodies riddled with bullets. Squeezing the trigger, I knew only the blast of my supersonic bullet tearing through the mountain air.

As a future Air Force officer, I gave little thought to gun violence or gun policy in America. I did not grow up with firearms, did not live proximate to endemic violence, nor was prevention a major political agenda. I remained blind to the history threading from my training to the violence ravaging Black neighborhoods, and the efforts America made to keep guns away from people who looked like me.

I believed guns, beyond the military and law enforcement, were the purview of two separate worlds: hunting enthusiasts and criminals. My binary vision remained fixed for decades. The media influenced my perception. The visual entertainment often depicted Black men glorifying AK-47s and Uzis in music, movies, and rap videos. The implicit message amplified was that Black people — especially young Black men like me — were an existential threat to the American way of life. If a Black man like me could swallow that twisted narrative about gun violence, I’m sure it was a gluttonous meal upon which many Americans gorged.

Securing my weapon, I had yet to learn one of the unspoken realities of American life: who possesses the gun matters. White men with guns are considered patriots, cops are protectors, and Black men are criminals. And even though I’d wear a uniform and serve my country, in some circles I would always fit that latter description.

  1. Last year, a black college kid accused my friend Grumble of being a racist because Grumble asked the kid to turn the music down. Grumble closed in on him and kissed him on the lips and asked again if he would, please, turn the music down. Then, Grumble turned and walked away. That kid was so shocked, he actually lowered the volume….a little.

Grumble is no racist, but knows he has only seen the world through his own eyes.

  2. BTW, I was taking inventory and discovered I have fewer that 100 rounds of buckshot. Guess I am going shopping this weekend.

    1. You should never have less than 500 rounds of shotgun ammo per gauge, especially 00 buck and slug and 1000 rounds of pistol/rifle ammo per caliber.

  3. Yes and no.

A white guy with face tattoos, dressed like a cretin and waving his gun around like an aloof stoner is seen exactly the same way as a black guy with face tattoos, dressed like a cretin waving his gun around like an aloof stoner.
A black guy without face tattoos, dressed like somebody who cares what society thinks, handling his gun with intention is seen exactly the same way as a white guy without face tattoos, dressed like somebody who cares what society thinks, handling his gun with intention is seen. Example: Colion Noir v. Lil Wayne.

These people who reduce everything to “mUh SkIn CoLoR” are missing the point. A perfect “forest for the trees” example.

If you care how others perceive you then act like you care how others perceive you.

We’ll see in three days. We have some cause to concern, a judge just ruled in Wisconsin that late, provisional votes must be counted. No matter how far ahead Trump is when the polls close, they will stuff the ballot box so their side wins.

A backlash is building to the whole ‘racial justice’ bullshit, and we should see concrete examples play out on election night. Trump will have to win by margins so large they can’t throw the election…

      1. Trump needs to win one of: WI, PA, or MI. As we saw in 2020, they aren’t taking any chances after the 2016 loss. Strict election procedures to prevent fraud should not favor any political party. It would only favor the party that doesn’t rely on cheating. The fact that Dems constantly fight against fair elections tells you everything you need to know.

      2. Hey Geoff. Remember that forum you linked to a couple of years ago that had left wingers losing their mind over some topic? What was the name of that forum?

My memory is fuzzy, can you give some examples?

          1. There was some legislation or ruling, either in Florida, or Trump era nationally. You linked to some forum where every comment was a left winger freaking out. It’s been awhile.

  4. The lead photo is embarrassing. The caption should be “Unqualified retards play with expensive military rifles” One can almost hear the Russians laughing.

  5. From the article:

So black hip-hop and rap artists are secret white supremacists holding the black man down? What are you doing about that, doc? Writing retarded things like “This future is rooted in racial justice” isn’t going to cut it.

    1. Because ‘Who’ possesses the gun does matter and more importantly the ammo. Because ammo the next BIG thing on liberal progressive democrats ban list since they are losing the battle on firearms.
