You may want to sit down before you read any further. Shocking new data reveal that magazines that hold more than ten rounds are — GASP! — normal in America.
If you’ve managed to compose yourself, read on. Our friends at the NSSF have been doing some digging and here’s what they’ve found. Of almost 1 billion detachable magazines produced and sold over the last 30 years, 74% of them hold more than ten rounds of ammunition.
If we didn’t know better, we might conclude that standard capacity magazines — those that hold more than the artificial limit of 10 rounds that’s imposed in some states — are in common use in America.
We sincerely hope this news doesn’t spoil the weekend for our any of our friends in the Civilian Disarmament Industrial Complex. Here’s the NSSF’s press release announcing their findings . . .
NSSF, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, revealed in a report that detachable magazines with a capacity exceeding 10 rounds are the overwhelming standard for firearm owners in the United States. The report, which surveyed 30-plus years of detachable magazine production and distribution, demonstrated that of the conservatively estimated 963,772,000 detachable magazines supplied from a firearm manufacturer and in the aftermarket, at least 717,900,000 have a capacity exceeding 10 rounds, the limit some states place for lawful magazine possession.
The Detachable Magazine Report (1990-2021) confirms what NSSF has known – that the national standard for magazine capacity for America’s gun owners is greater than 10 rounds. With nearly 1 billion detachable magazines in circulation, for both rifles and pistols, they are unquestionably commonly-owned and commonly-used for lawful firearm use, including recreational target shooting, hunting and self-defense. They are “arms” within the meaning of the Second Amendment. Detachable magazines are integral to the design of, and necessary for the proper functioning of, today’s modern semi-automatic firearms.
“The data establishes that law-abiding gun owners overwhelming choose magazines that have a capacity to hold more than ten rounds for lawful purposes including self-defense, target shooting and hunting,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President & General Counsel.
About 46 percent of the magazines estimated in this study are rifle magazines with 30+ round capacity. The percentage of detachable magazines at 11+ capacity is about 55 percent of total pistol magazines. The amount of 10 and below capacity rifle magazines supplied from the manufacturer is over one and a half times the amount of 30+ capacity rifle magazines. The consumer market totals of rifle magazines show 30+ capacity magazines, over 413 million, are over 30 times the amount available than 10 and below capacity rifle magazines, about 13 million.
Further examination of the data proves that of the 717,900,000 detachable magazines for pistols and rifles with a capacity greater than 10 rounds, 209,145,000 pistol magazines are in circulation from combined sales through firearm manufacturers (those magazines included with the firearm) and aftermarket production. Rifle magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds accounted for 508,755,000 and rifle magazines with a capacity of 30 rounds or greater totaled an estimated 448,369,000 from combined sale of those included with a firearm at sale and the aftermarket.
Just 245,872,000 pistol and rifle magazines with a capacity of 10 rounds or less are in circulation when accounting for the magazines included with a firearm from the manufacturer and the aftermarket.
… and 95% of the rest are 1911s and Ruger .22s.
Don’t I know it.
“…at least 717,900,000 have a capacity exceeding 10 rounds, the limit some states place for lawful magazine possession.”
This has some very ugly connotations for POTG in the fascist slave states. A cop looking for any excuse to jam you up just needs to try and fit 11 in a ten-rounder and off to jail/prison your sorry ass goes… 🙁
If we have a shift in the courts yes that is a concern. There are plugs for the bottom of magazines that would eliminate that possibility but if we go full kangaroo court it wouldn’t matter what we do anyway.
Those pure and honorable protectors serving society would never be out to jam people yup. Back the blue!
Ignore my comment if yours is intended as sarcasm. Having said that even if 99% of law enforcement is in fact and practice ‘pure and honorable’ in how they go about their jobs 1% is still more than enough to make things uncomfortable if they are the ones you run into on a given day.
Most of my own encounters have been amicable, I respect the job they are doing.
The detachable magazine issue is silly. Banning 11+ round mags won’t resolve anything. Mass shooters may simply carry a bag of many 10-rounders.
With practice, most firearms may be reloaded within seconds. No, semiautomatics aren’t able to “spray bullets” if they are capable of holding 11+ cartridges.
Look for the following Biden/Schumer/Newsome demands to emerge soon:
1. Only firearms with top-loading (Garand or SKS-type) internal magazines or with magazine tubes (most .22s)—plus single-shot, double-barrel, or bolt-action types will be allowed. All others will be “bought back” at taxpayer expense.
2. Magazines with 10+ round capacity will be “bought back.” Criminals who can make a profit at it may surrender theirs. If the prices are high enough,
they may rob or burglarize gun owners’ homes and gun stores to obtain both guns and magazines for “buy backs.”
3. Handguns with magazines than may be removed and reinserted will be banned, leaving revolvers and top-loaders with 10-round or less capacity.
4. Illegal alien criminals that Joe Biden has illegally invited to cross our borders–if they are charged with one or more felonies–will be given free
defense lawyers at taxpayer expense. As violent crime rates increase due to their actions, the Biden Administration will continue to push forward
its anti-Second Amendment agenda.
