Support for a National Ban on Handguns Drops to All-Time Low Among Democrats

One of the most recent data points to come out after the November election is just hilarious to me. Kamala Harris pretended to support the right to own a handgun, and as a result, Democrats’ support for a handgun ban has now dropped to the lowest level Gallup has ever measured, 33% (it was 49% last year).

Anti-gun groups are now too extreme even for their core constituency, Democrats. I’m sure they will once again deny they want to ban handguns because it’s so unpopular now, but their whole history as well as their ongoing support for things like the California Handgun Roster make clear it’s still their North Star.

It’s hard to see what would have cause that kind of sudden drop among Democrats aside from Kamala Harris’s phony stance. Antigun groups must be fuming. They mostly kept their mouths shut on this because they didn’t want to hurt Kamala’s chances (and they knew she was lying anyway), but now they’ve lost a lot more ground on what remains their biggest long-term goal…and Kamala didn’t even win.

As for those who will claim this is all the work of the nefarious gun lobby spending billions to hypnotize and delude the public, I need to remind everyone how absurdly small the entire gun industry is. Civilian gun sales in America is only about $9 billion a year. To compare, in 2023, the Campbell Soup Company’s global revenue amounted to approximately $9.6 billion. In other words, the entire gun business combined makes less than one canned soup company.

For the thousandth time, the anti-gunners aren’t losing because of the evil gun lobby. They’re losing because millions of Americans refuse to surrender their Second Amendment rights, and they’re voting accordingly. While guns weren’t the dominant issue in this election, you can still bet that the 2A vote was a significant boost that helped Trump to victory.
