Why Did a New Jersey Senator Walk an Armed Staffer Around Security in the Capitol?

Monday’s arrest of an armed congressional staffer of anti-gun Senator Cory Booker’s office clearly reveals the New Jersey Democrat is another Capitol Hill hypocrite when it comes to “guns for me, but not for thee,” the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said.

According to a published report, Capitol police arrested 59-year-old Kevin A. Batts of New Jersey, a retired Newark police detective for carrying a pistol without a license. He was reportedly arrested after accompanying Senator Booker into the U.S. Capitol building. He reportedly advised officers outside of the Senate gallery that he was armed.

“Yesterday afternoon a Member of Congress led an IDed staff member around security screening at the Hart Senate Office Building. Later that evening, outside the Senate Galleries, the IDed staff member — who is a retired law enforcement officer — told our officers he was armed,” a rep for US Capitol Police said in a statement Tuesday.

“Cory Booker has never met a gun control law he didn’t like,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “He has supported all kinds of gun grabbing proposals, the stricter the better. Yet, it is now revealed that Mr. Batts, described as a ‘special assistant’ to Booker, often accompanies him to events. Being a retired police officer makes him just another private citizen, with no special privileges. The fact he apparently goes with Booker, presumably armed, to various events in New Jersey is ample evidence the senator thinks it’s okay for him to have armed security, while he has labored to keep every average citizen disarmed, and vulnerable to violent crime.

“We can’t have any sympathy for Mr. Batts,” Gottlieb continued. “As a former police officer, he surely must know carrying a gun into the U.S. Capitol is strictly prohibited. And, since he is from New Jersey, where average citizens have a very difficult time getting a carry permit and non-residents cannot carry at all, he certainly knows the penalty for carrying without a license in a different jurisdiction.

“We’re reminded of the time back in 1986 when anti-gun-rights Sen. Ted Kennedy’s bodyguard was arrested in the Russell Senate Office Building for having an Uzi and Beretta in his gear,” Gottlieb recalled. “That man was also a former police officer. Booker appears to be cut from the same cloth; presuming his safety is more important than that of the single mom or the working dad going from one job to another to pay their bills and keep their families safe.

“It’s time the senator should understand,” he observed, “that what’s good for Cory ought to be good for the entire country. Armed personal protection is a right of the people, not a privilege of political office.”

  1. Is this Corey’s ‘I am Spartacus’ moment to defy senate rules by standing up to unjust gun laws? No, it’s just another hypocrite. Also see climate religious leaders that live like they don’t believe in the “crisis.”

Being a retired police officer makes him just another private citizen, with no special privileges.

Don’t they get special privileges sometimes?

“Don’t they get special privileges sometimes?”

In their home state, maybe most times, and what ever courtesy they are given out of state, under LEOSA or state law. But this is DC, where its forbidden without a permit so LEOSA might have applied had it not been the capital building, and in the capital building its forbidden unless you are previously authorized in some sort of protection capacity and have a permit or are active law enforcement. So basically, he was just another private citizen at that point with no special privileges.

      1. Right. It was poorly written. It should have been: “with no special privileges in this situation because they do get special privileges in other situations. They were exempt from magazine restrictions in CA and certain CCW restrictions in other places.

As I recall. Several years ago this same thing happened in New York City.
A democrat politian lead his “friend” around security and into his office.

A few minutes later his “friend” pulled out a gun and then shot that democrat dead right there.

They were so surprised that one of their own was carrying a gun.

Senator Booker is lucky to be alive. Because He’s a democrat.

  3. This is just simple arrogance. Even given their LEOSA status, jerks like this know they can’t carry on planes, into federal courthouses, or for the love of Pete into the frigging Capitol!

Booker is an entitled hypocrite, and his buddy is even worse. I hope they throw the book at him.

But watch, I bet Booker throws his buddy under the bus.

Yep. booger is the biggest FAKE since obozo.
Ran scared ratcrapless from Newark when the gangs threatened him.
Never lived in Newark – kept a “play house” in nyc for his liaisons with “friends” like mayor pete buttgiggy.

After Trump’s Election, Several NSF-Funded Censorship Tools Go Missing.

“The National Science Foundation incubated a host of online censorship programs starting in 2021 — funded by millions in taxpayer dollars.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) claims to be the place ‘where discoveries begin’ — but it funded programs where free speech ends. When The Federalist asked if it still funds anti-‘misinformation’ tools, a representative simply pointed to its public grants database, which lists censorship projects funded during the Biden administration.

  5. A retired cop could travel anywhere in the union and carry their gun. Including on board airplanes. That was changed by the Democrat congress and democrat president many decades ago.

So now this retired cop needs permission to carry his gun into Washington DC.

No, he needs permission and a DC carry permit to carry it into the capital building.
