Savage’s New A22 Takedown .22 Rifle in FDE

I noticed that Savage Arms dropped the A22 Takedown in FDE on the Instagram this morning. The A22 Takedown is direct competition for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown carbine. It’s Savage’s take on this concept on a .22LR semi automatic rifle that feeds from 10-round rotary magazines. It breaks down with a simple twist of the barrel making it compact enough for storage in a pack, on an ATV or snowmobile, or just out of the way in your Jeep or truck.

The A22 Takedown has a synthetic stock that holds three spare magazines, as well as a storage compartment in the the pistol grip. The 18-inch carbon steel barrel has adjustable iron sights, as well as a Picatinny rail, and is threaded for a suppressor.

The A22’s receiver is also made from carbon steel and has a black finish that matches nicely with the barrel finish. The A22 has a cross bolt safety and Savage’s popular adjustable AccuTrigger. While the FDE model is new, a basic black model has been around since the end of 2022.

While the features, and even the looks of the stock, appear similar to the 10/22 Takedown the big difference is in the price,. Ruger’s 10/22 Takedown with a Magpul backpacker stock has an MSRP of $669, whereas the Savage A22 Takedown’s MSRP is only $479, almost $200 cheaper. Both guns ship with one magazine so if you want to fill up the stock, you’ll need to grab a few extras.

  1. That’s a *very* viable alternative to what I paid for a Ruger takedown tactical…

  2. Mag compatibility? For example, the Thompson TR/22 can use the Ruger 10/22 rotary mag, with the only issue being last round bolt hold-open.
